What is Endodontics

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the pulp, or "the nerve" of the tooth. “Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is Greek for “tooth.” The pulp is inside the tooth, similar to the core inside of an apple, and it consists of nerves, blood vessels and other soft tissues which take part in the development and maturation of the tooth and roots.

Endodontics mostly deals with removing diseased pulp tissue in order to alleviate tooth pain and/or a dental abscess and infection. This is widely known as root canal treatment. Endodontics also deals with diseases related to the roots of the tooth such as root resorption, tooth cracks and other dental trauma such as teeth that have been knocked out or pushed into the socket.
